Cyclical, a term that often carries a negative connotation is a very present concept in the villages of Guatemala. The hardship of poverty and the cycle that it births is so embedded within the framework of how these communities function, it is hard to even locate the roots of this desperate issue.

Families that are already desolate from lack of work or lack of resources are unable to make ends meet, and thus are feeding their children corn mash and dirty water. Babies who are born to mothers who are malnourished themselves are finding survival near impossible due to living conditions and health complications. DSC_7972We find the same story time and time again.

It is the tale of the village of Los Limones.

Masses of people who found themselves without homes after a destructive earthquake settled in a long valley alongside the train tracks.

As we met the people living there, their needs were obvious.

Food.

Water.

Education.

The Gospel.

So we began the work…

DSC_8246In these short 5 years homes have been built, and churches have been established. Bellies are being filled with nutritious food through our sponsorship program, and there are spiritual programs at work.

In recent months we’ve watched an expansion of the school that started our relationship with this community. The U.S. Army coming to assist with the growing attendance and overspill of classrooms.

A little at a time, a different cyclical force is taking ownership.

When little children have food to eat and clean water to drink they are no longer sick and unable to go to school. When these same children start graduating with a full education, they are able to apply for jobs that have the potential to pull their families from the grip of poverty.

DSC_7694The course of these lives start shifting, and the whole time they’re being exposed to the gospel. This is the goal of it all- to meet the needs of others not just with our words, but with our actions as well.

“If you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness…” Isaiah 58:10
