Independence Day in Guatemala is September 15th. We had the opportunity to celebrate this occasion with the students from Liberty College at the school in the village. Angela Vargas, the tutor for the middle school and high school students, planned this event. It included a Mr. and Miss Independence Day pageant, with dancing, food and fun. The room was decorated with the artwork of the flag, the flower and the bird of Guatemala. The students were recognized for their creative patriotic artwork and were given excellent academic achievement awards.

We are so proud of the many children that were recognized for their excellent grades and amazing their creativity! They used recycled material to make beautiful dresses. Rosalinda wore a dress made of water bags. In Guatemala, water is most often sold in little plastic bags. She glued them onto material to make a beautiful dress. Aura made her radiant dress out of chip bags that she cut into strips. Keily used paper and tissue paper cut in various ways to make her amazing dress.

As we celebrate independence from Spain with our friends and family in Guatemala, we also pray that they will know true freedom through Jesus Christ our Savior.

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 2 Corinthians 3:17
