Every September 15th, Guatemala transforms into a kaleidoscope of colors and celebrations to mark its Independence Day, and at Hope of Life International, the festivities extend throughout the entire week!

This significant day commemorates Guatemala’s liberation from Spanish colonial rule and serves as a powerful expression of national pride and cultural richness. The air is filled with the beats of lively music, the spectacle of fireworks, and the colors of parades and cultural displays – and of course the delicious smells of national snacks: a true feast for the senses. 🇬🇹

Throughout Independence Week, the streets are awash with the national flag’s colors (blue and white) proudly worn and displayed by everyone. These colors symbolize unity and signify the Guatemala’s collective hope for a brighter future.

At Hope of Life, our celebrations go beyond the festivities; they echo a commitment to a better tomorrow. On campus and online this week, you can find us carrying torches (a cool annual tradition – the official torch is lit every year in Guatemala City and carried across the country via relay race!), eating yummy local snacks, singing patriotic songs, marching in parades, having parties, and flat-out celebrating being Guatemalan. Thanks to your support of our programming, Guatemala’s future is steadily becoming brighter, free from malnutrition and extreme poverty.
